Why work for OtherInbox?

We believe in hiring the best of the best employees to focus on the core aspects of our business and outsourcing non-core functions whenever possible. This results in a smaller, leaner team of higher quality individuals. Everyone here is performing a critical role and has an important voice in our community.

Cutting edge technology

We’re built on Ruby on Rails and hosted on Amazon Web Services EC2 and S3. Our front-end is built in the SproutCore Javascript MVC framework. We just finished switching from Subversion to Git and are now automating deployments with Chef. Building OtherInbox is fun and we’re learning new things all the time!

Find your inspiration

At OtherInbox, we’re fortunate to be able to work in great digs. Conveniently located in the business tower of the Omni hotel at 7th and Brazos, we have an open floorplan and stunning views of downtown, the Capitol, and the Hill Country.

The break rooms have a 50 cent drink machine and the ping-pong and foosball tables open at 5pm. There is usually a Risk game set up somewhere and you’ll often find someone working from a laptop on the 8 foot wide bean bag chair. Or maybe you want to go up to the top floor and work from the rooftop pool!

Giving back together

And we also realize that we’re part of a larger community and need to do our part. We donate 1% of our profits to charity and match employee donations. Together, we donate 1% of our working time to charity as well (which works out to one day per quarter). We try to do our part for Austin, TX and for our planet.

We support Breakthrough Austin, Capital Factory, the Hill Country Conservancy, and KLRU PBS (yes, we get tickets to see the Austin City Limits TV show tapings!).

We’ve given our time to plant trees and paint walls at local schools and packed bags for Meals on Wheels. We’re proud to participate regularly in the Entrepreneur’s Foundation activities.

We take interviewing seriously
We’re a small team which means that everyone plays a very important role and needs to be an A player. Not only do you have to be smart and get things done, but you also have to be nice and a team player.

Most relationships start with an introduction from a shared connection or from a resume submitted by email to jobs2009@otherinbox.com. More and more applicants start with a shared connection on LinkedIn. It’s always better to have a referral from someone we know.

Your first contact will probably be with one of our recruiters. We don’t work with traditional recruiters and headhunters, but we work with contractors to help do basic pre-screening of new applicants. They act like members of our team, gathering your basic information and checking that you meet the basic requirements.

We’ll ask you to respond to a handful of written questions. We’re not looking for any essays here – the entire response is about a page of text. Being able to communicate effectively by email is an important part of every job these days.

Next you’ll normally do two or three phone interviews before we ask you to come into the office for a morning or afternoon to meet with us in person. We’ll ask you to do some thinking on the spot – if you’re a programmer then we’ll expect you to write some code right there in front of us. We’d love to see samples of work product you’ve done in the past – whether it be open source code that you have contributed (bonus points!), design documents, or reports that you generated.

No one is hired without meeting with Joshua Baer, the founder and CEO of the company. His primary objective is to evaluate if you’re a good culture fit for the company and passionate about your new role. At the end of that meeting you’ll find out if we’re going to make you a job offer or not.

You can find out the status of your application at any time by sending an email to jobs2009@otherinbox.com.
